Core Rulebook, v0.1 Early Access

Tales of Venyria is a light-hearted tactical fantasy RPG inspired by mechanics from games such as Lasers & Feelings. Roll low on your d20 to cast your spells or persuade a guard, but roll high if you want to hit with your sword or break down a door. This trip into an alternate colorful fantasy setting is designed to encourage gimmicky adventures, light-hearted dungeon crawls, or dangerous sight-seeing quests. Combat is tactical without sweating the details, and you get to roll fistfulls of dice as you deal damage.

This rulebook contains everything you need to create a high fantasy character, choose their special skills and abilities, and take them on adventures. Play a character such as a magical Feyfolk, whose skin glitters and hair drifts like smoke, or even an eerie Demonfolk, with long horns and brightly colored skin. All characters in this system can both cast spells and use weapons, allowing for you to build your own colorful character with unique abilities and flair.

Combat is designed to maximize choice and tactics, while remaining simple and minimizing math. Adding together obvious numbers and tracking your remaining health is about the extent of math that you will have to do while playing. Accuracy in combat is simply determined by your own skill level, so you always know immediately if you hit or not. 

This system doesn’t sweat the details of your equipment, either. Whether you have a huge sword that floats behind your back and is sheathed in fire, a tiny glass dagger that glows with the screaming souls of a thousand victims, an enchanted slingshot, or a glowing wand, all weapons deal the same amount of damage. This allows you to go wild with your character concepts and make truly unique and thrilling characters in this magical fantasy world with almost no limits.

The land of Venyria is lush and teeming with magical creatures, ancient ruins, and beautiful landscapes. While traveling through the realm, you may encounter some of the following: Friendly sprites that cause mischief, rolling slimes that may bump into you, dangerous bandits that may ambush you, or flocks of crystal-encrusted birds that jingle in the wind. The people and cultures of the land vary greatly, and your adventure may have any theme that you are looking for.

As a fantasy system, you can use this system to play in any setting, including those made for other systems of similar themes. Just be aware that your GM may have to make some tweaks to make sure everything carries over. The setting included in this book is simply an example, and you are free to change the world around you at your table. With no rules locking down the use of European weapons like swords or bows, your campaign could have any sort of cultural theme that you would like!

With over 60 moves for your character to utilize, a slew of customization options like your species, your class (and subclass), and your motivations, every character can be unique in meaningful ways. Character creation is as simple as following a short checklist and filling in a digital sheet, usually done in less than 20 minutes. This system is likely a bit simpler than other d20 games, but more in-depth/tactical than many apocalypse or L&F games.
